The name Evangate is a combination of Evanton and Bathgate (where we grew up). On the hill behind Evanton sits the Fyrish monument.
Built in 1782, Fyrish is modelled on the Gate of Negapatam in Madras where Sir Hector Munro served with the British Army in India. On his retirement, he asked local labourers to build the monument.
Sir Hector was a native of Evanton during a period when local Highlanders were being driven off the land (‘The Highland Clearances”). Unemployment was high, so Sir Hector’s commission gave much-needed employment to the locals. Rumour has it that he even rolled stones back down the hill so he could pay the labourers more.
Sir Hector rolled up his sleeves and made sure the work was profitable for the people he was trying to help – and this is reflected in the way we operate.
